Mrs. Oyefunso Orenuga, provost of the Lagos State College of Nursing (LASCON), Igando, has urged all tiers of government to improve their financial support for nurse education and the nursing profession.

In a speech titled “Nurses: A Voice To Lead, Invest In Nursing and Rights To Secure Global Health” at the 2022 International Nurses’ Week Celebration hosted by the General Hospital, Ifako-Ijaiye, Mrs. Orenuga made the call, adding that any investment made in the nursing field will undoubtedly benefit the general public.

The Provost claims that because nurses are crucial in educating the people about how to prevent various illnesses and injuries, they are an integral element of every community, healthcare facility, school, and industry.

Additionally, they provide treatment for ill patients and take part in their rehabilitation.

In her own words, “Nurses are frontline employees and vital players in promoting a healthy society, illness prevention, caring for patients’ wellness, and acting as the backbone of all healthcare systems globally.

However, the obvious lack of nurses in the world is preventing people from receiving sufficient healthcare. In order to close the gap, more money must be spent on nursing practice and nurse training.

Orenuga listed a few strategies for enhancing the nursing profession, such as continuing to invest in nurses’ education and training, developing more specialized subfields of nursing practice, and providing medical facilities with cutting-edge technology tools, among others.

Nurses make up the largest group in the healthcare industry, according to Mrs. Adeola Omodele, Chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), General Hospital Ifako-Ijaiye Chapter.

She emphasized the importance of their preventive, promotive, and restorative interventions in preserving the general population’s optimal health.

She added that greater investment in nursing education and the profession would result in a considerable decline in morbidity and death rates worldwide, highlighting how dedicated nurses are to carrying out their responsibilities and enhancing healthcare service delivery.
