The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to motorists against the use of faulty or unauthorized vehicle registration number plates on roads within the state. The government emphasized that this practice is in violation of Sections 15 and 16 of the State’s Transport Reform Law of 2018.
Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, highlighted various instances of number plate misuse that are against the law, including covering number plates without authorization, using faded or damaged plates, misusing plates, and not using plates at all. He emphasized that these actions are particularly concerning due to the prevailing security challenges in the country.
Quoting Section 16 of the Transport Sector Reform Law, Toriola reaffirmed that driving a vehicle without proper registration or without affixed identification marks as prescribed is considered an offense.
Toriola underscored the significance of proper vehicle registration and identification for security purposes. He expressed concern that vehicles without proper number plates can potentially be involved in criminal activities that might remain untraceable.
He recommended that motorists use water and non-chemical methods to clean their number plates in order to prevent damage. Toriola also addressed the misuse of private number plates on commercial vehicles, stating that this practice is also a violation of the law.
For those who are temporarily unwilling to register their vehicles, Toriola advised them to obtain a Temporary Vehicle Tag (TVT) from the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) of the State. This tag can be issued under section 193 of the Transport Reform Law, allowing vehicle owners to comply with the law
