Cars are now being released with new number plates in March, but some combinations are banned by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) twice a year to prevent rude or offensive registrations.
Prior to each new release, the DVLA holds a meeting to go through the potential combinations of letters and numbers to prevent those that could cause offence, embarrassment or be in poor taste.
Carwow obtained a list of the 23 plates that were suppressed by the DVLA, which included combinations that were always rude as well as those that could be offensive in the current situation. For instance, plates like GO23 HEL or EA23 POO, BA23 TRD, BO23 OKS, and MU23 DER are likely to be perennially offensive.
Other recent events led to the suppression of plates like RU23 UKR, NO23 RUS, YE23 WAR, CO23 ONA, and EU23 BAD.
Rude plates that may slip through the DVLA’s net ahead of the change can be rescinded later.
However, the vast majority of registration numbers are still made available, as most are unlikely to offend. Some plates such as TO23 ERR and AA23 OLE were also reportedly banned by the DVLA to prevent offence on the road.
Moreover, plates such as BL23 JOB, EA23 VAJ, and FA23 NNY are more examples of rude plates. Despite personalized number plates being a lucrative business that has brought in £ 2 billion for the Treasury since the DVLA started selling them in 1989, there are some plates that are too rude for the road.
Carwow’s consumer editor, Hugo Griffiths, believes that changing your car during the March and September plate-change months can be a wise idea, both for people wanting to have the latest reg and bargain hunters who could get a good deal on a car with the previous registration.
Although few would argue against the suppression of offensive number plates, the biannual meetings where DVLA staff sit down and deliberately come up with rude combinations must be one of the highlights of the organization’s calendar.
