In a snippet of her new podcast shared with People magazine, former first lady Michelle Obama spoke about her family’s departure from the White House in January 2017.
She described the day as emotional, particularly when they flew over the National Mall, and she noted that “there weren’t many people there” at President Trump’s inauguration.
Obama also remarked on the lack of diversity on display during the swearing-in ceremony, saying that there was “no reflection of the broader sense of America.”
During the interview, Obama shared that people were taking pictures of her and asking if she was in a good mood. She admitted that she was not, but that she had to “hold it together like you do for eight years.”
The size of Trump’s inauguration audience quickly became a point of contention with the media, with then-press secretary Sean Spicer insisting that it was the largest of any other president in history.
Kellyanne Conway, one of Trump’s top advisers, got into a heated exchange the next day on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” when asked why Trump would mischaracterize the size of the crowd.
Trump himself blamed the “dishonest media” for underestimating the number of people who attended his swearing-in ceremony, stating that it looked like “a million and a half people” and that it went all the way back to the Washington Monument.
However, the National Park Service released photos showing that the crowd was significantly smaller than the audience that witnessed Obama taking the oath of office in 2009.
