Michael Gove has faced criticism for ignoring the UK’s need for more homes while announcing the Government’s plans to impose new laws on people using second homes for holiday lets.
The new laws will require planning permission for converting homes into short-term holiday lets to prevent the “pushing out of local people from cherished towns”.
According to Gove, “more people must have access to local homes at affordable prices, and we must prioritize families desperate to rent or buy a home of their own close to where they work.”
Gove has listened to the concerns of MPs from tourist hotspots and launched a consultation for planning permission for short-term lets.
However, Jeremy Leaf, an estate agency owner, criticised Gove for ignoring the bigger issue of the UK’s need for more homes.
Speaking on GB News, Leaf stated that there is a balance between living in these areas and stifling business.
He believes that the balance is skewed in many of these areas and that control should be given back to local people.
Leaf further added that not enough homes are being built in the UK, especially affordable ones for people to rent or buy.
