Ciara Mangan, who publicly spoke about being raped at a house party ten years ago by a former co-worker, revealed that she faced “rape songs” and “rape comments” from colleagues at her workplace.

McDonald’s UK and Ireland CEO, Alistair Macrow, has expressed his deep concern and commitment to thoroughly investigate the allegations through the company’s investigation-handling unit.

Company’s Response to Sexual Harassment and Bullying

Acknowledging previous shortcomings in addressing sexual harassment and bullying within the company, Mr. Macrow appointed a specialized unit to tackle these issues.

The investigation-handling unit will have the authority to refer cases to expert investigators, aiming to create a safer and more respectful work environment for employees.

McDonald’s faced a report by the BBC highlighting numerous allegations of harassment within the company, leading to the decision to establish the new unit.

Pledging Accountability and Zero Tolerance

The CEO emphasized his shock and remorse over the recent allegations and extended his unreserved apology and empathy to all those affected.

He is determined to address any behavior or conduct that falls below the high standards of respect, safety, and inclusion that McDonald’s demands from its employees, as outlined in their global brand standards.

The investigation-handling unit, comprising HR and legal professionals, will be in operation at least until the end of the year, with any substantiated breaches of the code of conduct leading to severe consequences, including possible dismissal.

External Experts and Reevaluating Complaint Procedures

In response to the allegations and concerns about the company’s handling of complaints, McDonald’s plans to appoint external experts to evaluate the efficacy and accessibility of its escalation policy.

The focus will be on ensuring that employees understand the policy and that complaints are handled appropriately.

The CEO is determined to enforce a zero-tolerance policy on any form of harassment and pledges to communicate a message of respect and inclusivity throughout the organization.

Previous Reports and Equality Agreement

The BBC previously reported several incidents of sexual harassment and abuse at McDonald’s, including inappropriate behavior by workers and managers.

In February, McDonald’s signed an agreement with the equality watchdog to improve its approach to handling sexual harassment allegations.

This investigation adds to the company’s efforts to address the issue and create a safer workplace for its employees.

In 2019, the Bakers Food and Allied Workers Union reported instances of sexual harassment and abuse faced by 1,000 women working at the chain.

The allegations against McDonald’s highlight the urgency for the company to address and rectify instances of harassment and ensure a safer and more inclusive environment for all employees.
