Matthew Potts receives his first call-up to the England one-day international squad

For the upcoming series against South Africa, Matthew Potts has received his first call-up to the England one-day international squad.

Under the leadership of Ben Stokes, the Durham fast bowler has taken part in all four Test matches, recording 18 wickets at an average of 26.72 during England’s victories over New Zealand and India.

The 23-year-old has been given the opportunity to play against the Proteas despite having only 10 List A appearances at the domestic level.

Only 48 hours after playing India in the ODI series-deciding match at Old Trafford, England kicks off their next limited overs series at Potts’ home ground of Chester-le-Street.

Adil Rashid, the preferred leg-spinner, will take the place of Matt Parkinson for the 50-over and 20-over squads following his return from the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

In Rashid’s absence, Parkinson made two appearances and claimed one wicket, but he is still regarded as a backup option in all formats.

Tymal Mills is not present, but Jonny Bairstow is back in the T20 lineup after missing out against India due to his success in the Test side.

As part of his continued workload management, Stokes is once again given a day off from the T20 matches.

The England and Wales Cricket Board also announced that Stokes would not be available for the Northern Superchargers at the opening of this year’s Hundred event.

The six contests versus South Africa are scheduled for July 19–31.
