Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has invited his national team rival Hugo Broos to the club following Broos’s recent criticism of local football.
Last Saturday, Bafana Bafana ended a four-match losing streak in all competitions with a 4-0 home victory over Sierra Leone.
But Broos’ men were not at their best in Tuesday night’s second friendly against Botswana at FNB Stadium, as they struggled to a 1-0 victory.
And this lackluster performance enraged the Belgian-born coach, who complained that some PSL players are not good enough for Bafana.
Mngqithi, who has been around for some time, did not take the aggressive words made by Broos on Thursday afternoon lying down.
“Because this is a free country, you can say whatever you want. “However, if you’re winning games, you can say whatever you want,” Mngqithi explained.
“There will always be question marks if you are not successful. However, I am uncertain as to whether South African players are adequate or not.
“We are aware that South Africa has accomplished a great deal in the past… Therefore, I feel there is a large pool of talented players from which to choose.
“However, if you are picking whoever and not winning while pointing fingers at other players, perhaps the majority of fingers are pointing in your direction.”
“However, if you are winning games, we are inclined to listen to you, as this demonstrates your strategy. However, the quality of these matchups is also essential.”
Broos also criticized the PSL’s management, claiming that the league has refused him numerous opportunities to speak with local coaches.
However, Mngqithi denied ever receiving a meeting request from Broos. Therefore, he has issued an invitation to Broos to visit Chloorkop.
“We have never denied the national team coach the opportunity to communicate with us. He is free to travel to Chloorkop. “He may contact me at any time,” stated Mngqithi.
“It would be interesting to know what he sees as well, as his statements have also been inconsistent. It’s always preferable to resolve these issues in person.
“We’ve never said ‘no’ to Hugo! Maybe we need to contact him and request a meeting. He has never contacted me or any of the Sundowns coaches.
“At Sundowns, he is welcome to visit at any time. He may observe training if he so chooses. He is the national team’s coach, and we respect him.”
