A stretch of the M48 motorway in Monmouthshire is set to be closed for “several hours” following a police incident that occurred on Monday morning, July 31.
The closure is in effect between J2 Newhouse and J23 Rogiet, as confirmed by Traffic Wales at approximately 5:00 am.
Diversions and Traffic Impact
According to reports, diversions have been put in place to reroute traffic, but motorists are cautioned about the possibility of encountering congestion in the affected area.
The closure, which extends in both directions from J2 A466 Wye Valley Link Road (Chepstow) to M4 J23, is being monitored by the traffic monitoring service, Inrix.
Despite the closure, traffic conditions in the vicinity are reported to be manageable at this time.
However, authorities expect the motorway to remain closed for a few hours, and as a result, motorists are encouraged to seek alternative routes to reach their destinations.

Similarly, the Severn Bridges’ page on X reassured the public that despite the closure, the M48 Bridge itself remains open.
They tweeted, “The M48 is closed in both directions between Junction 2 Newhouse Roundabout and Junction 23 of the M4.
This is for a Gwent Police-led incident.
Diversions are in place, which may cause congestion.
The M48 Bridge remains open.”
Additionally, Gwent Police shared information on Facebook, stating, “The M48 is currently closed in both directions between Junction 2, Newhouse Roundabout and Junction 23 of the M4.
Diversions are in place, which may cause congestion. Please avoid the area if possible and find alternative routes for your journey.”
Motorists are advised to stay updated on the situation through official channels and take necessary precautions while traveling in the affected area until the motorway is reopened for regular traffic.
