LSSC and PWC hosted the sixth annual “Chess4Change” grand slam (PWC)

The seventh annual “Chess4Change” grand slam competition for pupils in Lagos State public schools was organized by the Lagos State Sports Council (LSSC) in partnership with Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC).

The Director-General of LSSC, Oluwatoyin Gafaar, opened the event at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, by saying that sports are an all-encompassing activity that focuses on strengthening every aspect of your body, including your mental abilities.

The event was created to provide the kids a platform to develop their latent potential in the game, he said, noting that sports, particularly Chess, are extremely effective at raising intelligence levels of participants, including students, which highlights the purpose behind the yearly competition.

Gafaar praised PWC for supporting the youth program and urged the company to do more to expand and provide more prizes so that the competition could draw in more participants.

Chess is cited by Pedro Omontuemhen, a PWC Country Operation Partner, as a tool that may help kids develop their critical thinking skills.

He said, “We are concentrating on kids in public schools because chess can be utilized to change their thinking, behavior, and academic achievement.”
