Louis Orr, a former Seton Hall coach and Knicks player, has passed away at the age of 64.

Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports initially reported the story.

“The college basketball community mourns Louis Orr’s passing,” tweeted Rothstein on Friday morning. “A beautiful man who was abruptly stolen from us. Orr was a player for Syracuse before becoming the head coach of Siena, Seton Hall, and Bowling Green. He formerly worked as Patrick Ewing’s assistant at Georgetown. May God bless his loved ones.”

Orr was born in Cincinnati and was a standout at Syracuse from 1976 to 1980. The Pacers selected him in the second round of the 1980 NBA Draft, and he played for them for two seasons before spending six years with the Knicks.

Louis Orr, a former Knicks player and Seton Hall coach, has passed away at the age of 64.

In his eight-year NBA career, Orr averaged 9.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game.

Orr began his coaching career in 1991, serving as an assistant at Xavier, Providence, and Syracuse for several years. Then, he was the head coach at Siena from 2000 to 2001, Seton Hall from 2001 to 2006, and Bowling Green from 2007 to 2014. Since 2017, he has served as an assistant on the Georgetown staff of his old Knicks colleague Patrick Ewing.

Among the mourners was current Iona head coach Rick Pitino, who coached Orr as an assistant at Syracuse and as the Knicks’ head coach.

Pitino wrote, “So heartbroken by the news of Louis Orr’s passing.” “My first Syracuse recruit and New York Knicks player was as good a person as any NBA player — our prayers are with his family.”
