Lifeguards save tourist from 4-meter shark attack

In horrifying video, two lifeguards are seen removing a man from the water after a shark attacked him and making vain attempts to save his life.

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon (February 19) at the Château Royal beach in New Caledonia when the Australian tourist, 59, was around 150 meters from the coast.

He was attacked twice by the beast, a 4 m long tiger shark, and sustained injuries to his hands, forearm, and leg.

On jet skis, two lifeguards raced out to the man and hauled him ashore. They tried to pull him off the jet ski in a video that has been circulating online.

Then, while the other ran to the Hotel Chateau Royal to obtain assistance, one lifeguard fought to pull him up the beach.

Regrettably, the Aussie man had a deadpan appearance the whole time. While CPR was given by first responders, he was pronounced dead at the site.

The incident occurred near to a jetty and a restaurant where patrons sometimes attract sharks by throwing food from a viewing platform to lure fish.

The Chateau Royal Beach was promptly closed down. It is still closed, and visitors are advised to stick to their hotel pools.

The man was face down in the water when the jet ski hit him, a hotel visitor told the Daily Mail Australia.

We could see blood from the shore, it was all over. They had just recently reopened the beach when there were so many people in the water at once.

In the last three weeks, there have been three shark attacks close to Chateau-Royal beach.

A 49-year-old swimmer suffered significant injuries on January 29. Just a few days later, a surfer was assaulted.

Officials apparently want to kill all bull sharks and tiger sharks in the area.
