LeBron James jersey fetches a staggering R63,7 million

On Friday, a game-worn jersey of basketball superstar LeBron James sold at auction for $3.7 million (R63.7 million), five times the previous record for one of his shirts.

As he approaches the NBA’s all-time scoring record, interest in the 38-year-old LA Lakers icon is higher than normal.

New York-based Sotheby’s sold the jersey worn by James during the Miami Heat’s 2013 NBA Finals game seven victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

It broke the previous record of $630,00 for a 2020 James All-Star jersey.

Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey, which sold for $10.1 million in September 2022, is the costliest item of its kind at present.

Last year, the “Hand of God” shirt of Diego Maradona sold for $9.3 million at Sotheby’s in London.

LeBron James needs just 178 points to surpass Kareem Abdul-38,387-point Jabbar’s total for the Lakers, one of the most desired and enduring marks in basketball.

Friday, Sotheby’s also sold a garment worn by Princess Diana for $604,800.
