A landlord in Sydney has faced backlash for renting out a two-bedroom apartment for $2,000 a month and cramming four people into one room.
A prospective tenant shared a photo of the converted barrack-like room online, which showed two bunk beds squeezed into a small space with no air conditioning.
The tenant expressed heartbreak at the sight and said that they were disconnected from the housing crisis, but wanted to share the picture.
The apartment has another room advertised for two tenants.
Social media users expressed their anger at the property’s horrific state, with some stating that renting beds on balconies with plastic sheeting was not uncommon.
Others shared similar experiences, with one saying that they stayed in an apartment in Newtown/St Peters with six guys in one room.
The rental crisis in Australia has led to subpar living conditions, with converted garden sheds and wooden lofts being advertised for rent.
A garden shed was being advertised for $350 per month in an unnamed Melbourne suburb, while a wooden loft in inner-city Pyrmont was available for $330 per week.
The Pyrmont loft had space for a mattress, but not much else.
