Labour and the Conservatives believe that Ms Sturgeon’s departure will boost their chances

According to a recent poll by Savanta, many voters believe that Scottish independence is now less likely following the departure of Nicola Sturgeon as SNP leader.

Three candidates have been confirmed in the race to succeed her, with Kate Forbes initially being the frontrunner. Still, her campaign was almost derailed due to her religious beliefs and social views.

The other two candidates are Ash Regan, who has positioned herself as a unity candidate, and Health Secretary Humza Yousaf, who is seen as Ms Sturgeon’s anointed successor.

The poll suggests that whoever wins the leadership race will have difficulty gaining momentum for independence.

The contest has focused on candidates’ religious beliefs and social views, but many SNP voters have yet to decide who to back.

Labour and the Conservatives believe that Ms Sturgeon’s departure will boost their chances at the next general election and the unionist cause.

The poll found that opinion was split over whether Ms Sturgeon had left her country a better place at the end of her eight-year tenure.

More than half of those questioned across the UK believed she made the right decision to resign.
