Kenya Barris was served papers at the ‘You People’ premiere by his own sister

The latest film by hot Hollywood director Kenya Barris, “You People,” is all about family drama, but the creator of “Black-ish” had his own at the film’s star-studded premiere.

Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill feature in “You People,” which Netflix describes as a “outrageous romantic comedy” with “a seemingly endless supply of family land mines.” And things became somewhat combustible off-screen at the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood, California, when Barris’ sister presented him with court papers during his big moment.

A source stated that when Barris was relishing in the applause of the audience following the screening, he was encircled by photographers taking his picture. However, one of the seeming photographers was actually a process server, who handed Barris court documents and announced, “You’ve been served.”

Murphy, along with co-stars Nia Long, Lauren London, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and David Duchovny, attended the red carpet premiere. Elliott Gould, Anthony Anderson, Cedric the Entertainer, Yung Miami, and others were also there.

Documents filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court indicate Barris was served at the Westwood movie theater at 9:54 p.m. on January 17, the night of the debut.

Barris and his sister, Colette Barris, are involved in a court conflict, as evidenced by the documents.

Page Six has seen legal documents in which Colette accuses Kenya of “breach of contract.”

Her court statement states that the siblings engaged into a legal agreement on February 22, 2021, adding, “The parties in pertinent part agreed ‘not to communicate any disparaging remarks about each other or the circumstances leading to this Agreement.’”

The documents further say, “In or around June 2022, [Kenya] told a third party that (1) Plaintiff was a ’70-year-old hack with no talent’ and (2) Plaintiff had not earned the ‘right to be a show creator’ but rather ‘wanted to go to the front of the line’.”

Barris’s additional credits include “Coming 2 America.”

However, their animosity dates back further, as they have apparently engaged in at least one prior legal conflict.

Barris’s representative did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment, while Colette’s representative declined to comment.

In addition to “Grown-ish,” “Girls Trip,” and “Coming 2 America,” Kenya has also been in the Disney Plus remake of “Cheaper By the Dozen.”
