Justice Department will monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws in Alaska

The Justice Department announced today that it will monitor the August 16, 2022, federal primary election in certain Alaskan jurisdictions to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965’s minority language accessibility requirements and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990’s disability accessibility requirements.

The Civil Rights Division will be monitoring voting in the following jurisdictions on election day: the Municipality of Anchorage, the City and Borough of Juneau, the Bethel Census Area, the Dillingham Census Area, and the Kusilvak Census Area. The Division also supervised early/absentee voting in Municipality of Anchorage, City and Borough of Juneau, Kenai Peninsula Borough, Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Denali Borough, Fairbanks North Star Borough, and Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area.

The Division routinely deploys personnel around the nation to ensure compliance with federal civil rights laws during elections. Additionally, the Division employs Office of Personnel Management monitors when allowed by a federal court order.
