Josephine Tewson dies at 91

According to her agency, Josephine Tewson, who was most remembered for her work in Last of the Summer Wine and Keeping Up Appearances, has passed away at the age of 91.

She had a career on theatre and film beginning in the 1950s. She is best remembered for playing Hyacinth Bucket’s patient neighbour and Elizabeth Warden’s counterpart on Keeping Up Appearances.

She also had subsequent on-off appearances as Miss Davenport in Last of the Summer Wine.

We announce the demise of Josephine Tewson with deep sorrow, according to a statement.

At the age of 91, Josephine passed away quietly yesterday night at Denville Hall.

She earned her degree from RADA in 1952 and spent three years married to fellow actor Leonard Rossiter before divorcing in 1961.

Ronnie Corbett and Ronnie Barker appeared alongside him on David Frost on Sunday and Gark at Barker, respectively.

He also made cameos on the police drama Z-Cars and The Charlie Drake Show.

She played Edna “Mrs H” Hawkins in the first six episodes of Peter Tilbury’s comedy Shelley from 1979, which also starred Hywel Bennett, Warren Clarke, and Belinda Sinclair.

Before she retired, she worked on Clarence in 1988, which was her last assignment.
