Veteran Nollywood actress Joke Silva recently voiced her apprehensions regarding the limited representation of women in prominent leadership roles in Nigeria, particularly within the political landscape.
In an interview with TVC, Silva expressed dismay over the decline of female leaders in contemporary Nigeria, highlighting a concerning regression from the era of influential women leaders in pre-independent Nigeria.
A Call for Inclusivity
Silva underscored the absence of democratically elected female governors in the country’s history, noting that despite notable figures like Virginia Ngozi Etiaba assuming the role of Anambra State governor in 2006, they were not elected to the position.
This lack of elected female governors remains a significant concern for Silva, who believes that the nation should have made considerable progress in promoting women’s leadership in politics.
Reflecting on Past Influential Women
Referencing historical figures like Fumilayo Kuti and other powerful women in Nigeria’s past, Silva pointed out the need for the growth and increased representation of women in leadership roles.
Drawing attention to individuals like Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, Silva highlighted her extensive political experience, emphasizing the scarcity of similar female leaders in contemporary Nigerian politics, particularly in significant political positions such as the Senate.

Silva echoed the sentiments of late Chief MKO Abiola, referencing his analogy of a nation “clapping with one hand.” This metaphor emphasizes the inadequacy of representation and the need for a balanced and inclusive leadership structure.
