Johnny Cash’s Casitas Springs house sold for $55,000 more than asking price

A house near Casitas Springs previously owned by Johnny Cash, the father of country music, just sold for $1.85 million, $55,000 more than the asking price.

In June, the home was put up for sale for $1.795 million. According to listing records, it was sold in August, two months later. The listing was owned by Douglas Elliman’s Adam McKaig and Melissa Borders.

With his then-wife Vivian, Cash purchased the 5.91-acre home in Ventura County, California, as per the advertisement. Until their divorce in 1966, the couple resided there with their daughters.

According to property documents cited by The Wall Street Journal, Cash’s ex-wife sold the home in the early 1970s.

Even though the sellers are admirers of Cash, they chose to buy the mansion regardless of its past.

The seller, Chip Hickman, told Insider, “Raising my kids on this vast and isolated property was just what we were searching for.”

In 2003, he and his wife Jo Ann purchased the house. According to Hickman, they were seeking for a place big enough to accommodate their five-person family as well as his wife’s parents and her brother.

“After a lengthy career as a fireman, I retired three years ago, and my children are now adults and gone to college. After the passing of my in-laws, it’s time for us to reduce a little “said Hickman.

Everything in the house was custom-designed by Johnny Cash, according to Hickman.

Cash, according to Hickman, placed features including a grandfather clock in the foyer, a wall-mounted turntable, and a brick fireplace.

What’s not original would be a shorter list, he remarked. “That would be the carpet, a little paint, and I think the house originally had wood-shake shingles,” the speaker said.

Since Cash’s time, minor elements have been added to the property, but no significant renovations, according to Hickman.

The majority of these renovations, which included landscaping and fence work, were made on the outside of the house.

He says, “Stone was added, and the front walkway was expanded. The majority of the windows were rebuilt, and an outdoor kitchen was installed.

The tranquilly of the place, according to Hickman, was his favourite aspect of living there.

The night sky isn’t being obscured by city lights, he said. There is also a tonne of wildlife to see, such as songbirds, deer, fox, raptors, raccoons, owls, and squirrels.

The views of the rocky cliffs behind the house are unmatched since the property is perched on a slope, he said.

According to the listing, Cash penned several of his well-known songs in the wood-paneled studio, where the windows gave him seclusion.

According to what Hickman had been told, Johnny used to create music in the original wood-paneled office.

Cash went on to say that the studio was a location where he could make music without waking his sleeping family.

He allegedly napped during the day and was a bit of a night owl, according to rumours, Hickman said.

The home has four complete bathrooms and five bedrooms.

The home contains two master suites with bedrooms.

“The owner before us painted the black and gold-flecked ceiling of Johnny’s bedroom white. They painted Vivian’s bedroom ceiling white and gave it a pink ceiling with gold flakes “explained Hickman.

The bathrooms, including Cash’s black toilet, and every other bedroom ceiling are all original, he said.

A grilling area, a pool house, and a swimming pool are featured on the property.

According to Borders, “the house is a veritable time capsule, as if Johnny and Vivian just walked out.”

She said to Insider in July that she anticipated the purchasers to be admirers of Johnny Cash: “They are phoning and arriving from various US states. Hearing about their early encounters with Johnny Cash and the reasons they “had to have this mansion” is interesting.”

When Insider contacted Borders for comment over the deal, they did not answer right away.
