James Gunn Advises Joe Manganiello to Move On from Deathstroke Role, Graphic Novel Legacy Ensues

Recent reports reveal that Joe Manganiello, known for his portrayal of Deathstroke in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), had discussions with director James Gunn regarding the possibility of reprising the role.

However, Gunn reportedly advised Manganiello to let go of the character, leading the actor to explore alternative avenues to continue Deathstroke’s legacy.

Reflections on Conversations with James Gunn

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Manganiello shared insights into his conversations with James Gunn about the Deathstroke role.

Despite the actor’s interest, Gunn suggested moving on from the character.

Legacy Continuation in Graphic Novel Form

While acknowledging that he might not return to the role in live-action, Manganiello found a way to keep the character alive by creating a graphic novel series.

DC Comics’ Jim Lee had expressed interest in turning Manganiello’s screenplay for a Deathstroke origin film into a graphic novel.

Although the potential for attachment to a film adaptation was uncertain, Manganiello decided to pursue the graphic novel route.

James Gunn’s Advice: ‘Let It Go’

James Gunn, known for his work in reshaping the DC Universe alongside producer Peter Safran, reportedly encouraged Manganiello to “let it go.”

Gunn and Safran are actively involved in revamping the DC Universe, starting with the upcoming Creature Commandos animated series.

DC Universe Evolution Under Gunn and Safran

Gunn and Safran’s collaboration aims to introduce new elements to the DC Universe, with projects like Creature Commandos, Superman: Legacy, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and the second season of Peacemaker.

The DC Extended Universe underwent a conclusion with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in the previous year.

Deathstroke’s Brief Stint in the DCEU

Manganiello’s portrayal of Deathstroke was relatively short-lived, with appearances in post-credits scenes of Justice League and Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Despite plans for Deathstroke to be the main antagonist in a Batman movie featuring Ben Affleck, the film never materialized, leaving Manganiello’s portrayal constrained within limited screen time.

The actor won’t be reprising the role in the new direction the DC franchise is taking.
