Nollywood actress Jaiye Kuti, also known as Jayeola Monje, has addressed the significant backlash she faced after criticizing her senior colleagues for begging fans for money.
In recent weeks, veteran actors such as Iya Gbonkan, Lalude, Pariolodo, and Alapinni publicly sought help from Nigerians due to their worsening financial situations.
While many Nigerians responded by providing assistance, Jaiye Kuti perceived their behavior as deceitful.
Jaiye Kuti’s Critique of Online Money Pleas
Expressing her views on her Instagram page, Jaiye Kuti strongly criticized the veterans for resorting to online begging.
The acclaimed actress lamented the negative impact their pleas for help were having on the reputation of the Yoruba movie industry.
She observed that many of her colleagues failed to plan for their future, instead squandering their earnings on short-lived pleasures.
Jaiye Kuti’s Stance on Fundraising and Industry Image
Jaiye Kuti clarified that she does not oppose raising funds for health-related issues.
However, she vehemently disapproves of tarnishing the image of the Yoruba film industry by publicly begging for basic needs.
While her video received mixed reactions online, with some supporting her for speaking the truth and others condemning her for criticizing her senior colleagues, Jaiye Kuti stood firm in her stance.
Jaiye Kuti’s Response to Backlash
Responding to the backlash she received, Jaiye Kuti emphasized that she does not discourage ailing veterans from seeking help.
Instead, she criticized the misuse of such opportunities for personal gain.
Addressing those who misunderstood her message, she clarified that she did not advocate for using social media to ask for help, but rather cautioned against individuals who seek to spoil the industry’s reputation through begging.
Jaiye Kuti also shared that she herself has used social media to seek help for others, and received messages of appreciation from those she assisted.
Jaiye Kuti’s Call for Responsible Requests
Jaiye Kuti’s plea was for those who feel entitled to help because others are receiving it to reconsider their approach.
She recounted advising two of the veterans against publicly begging for assistance, urging them to refrain from doing so to ensure that they would not be left without help when they truly needed it.
She suggested that only those who are genuinely sick should seek help, while those who are financially stable should refrain from public begging.
Yomi Fabiyi’s Criticism of Jaiye Kuti
Actor Yomi Fabiyi criticized Jaiye Kuti for her remarks on veteran actors.
Taking to his Instagram page, he voiced his disagreement, asserting that if anyone needs help and chooses to make it public, it should not concern Jaiye Kuti.
Yomi suggested that if Jaiye Kuti cannot assist financially struggling or ailing actors, she should allow them the freedom to seek help from others.
He also mentioned the challenges faced by new millennium actors in terms of piracy and exploitation by capitalists.
