Israel increases its troops at the west bank after a Palestinian gunmen killed two Israelis

Israel has deployed hundreds of additional troops to the West Bank after a Palestinian gunman killed two Israelis and Jewish settlers went on a rampage in a Palestinian town, setting homes and vehicles on fire. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appealed for calm while some members of his ruling coalition have praised the rampage as deterrence against Palestinian attacks. Sunday’s violence, which included shootings and clashes, has drawn condemnation from the international community. The US attempted to reduce tensions through conflict management, bringing together Israeli and Palestinian officials in Jordan.

The situation started when a Palestinian gunman shot and killed two brothers from the Jewish settlement of Har Bracha in the town of Hawara in the northern West Bank. Groups of settlers rampaged through the town, and several hundred troops were sent by Israel to the area to de-escalate the situation. The army has not yet caught the Palestinian gunman. A 37-year-old Palestinian was shot and killed by Israeli fire, and two Palestinians were shot and wounded. Palestinian media reported that some 30 homes and cars were torched.

Defense Minister Yoav Galant told reporters that Israel “cannot allow a situation in which citizens take the law into their hands,” but stopped short of outright condemning the violence. Labor Party leader Merav Michaeli called the rampage “a pogrom by armed militias” of West Bank settlers. The Yaniv brothers were laid to rest in Jerusalem on Monday.

The international community has called for the immediate de-escalation of tensions. So far this year, 62 Palestinians and 14 Israelis have been killed in violence between the two groups. The West Bank is home to several hard-line settlements whose residents frequently vandalize Palestinian land and property.
