Iran’s coach Carlos Queiroz is returning

Tehran — State media reported on Monday that Carlos Queiroz is expected to return for a second stint as Iran’s head coach ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

“The (Iranian) football federation will announce Carlos Queiroz’s appointment as national team coach by the end of the week,” stated Iran Varzeshi, a sports newspaper.

Queiroz, 69, will succeed Dragan Skocic, who was fired in July and reinstated less than a week later.

IRNA said that the new head of the federation, Mehdi Taj, is seriously considering the return of the Portuguese coach.

During his election campaign, Taj promised to reappoint the former Manchester United assistant and Real Madrid coach.

Last Monday, he was chosen president of the Iranian football federation, a position he previously held from 2016 until 2019.

During his eight-year reign, Queiroz led Iran to the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, the longest in national team history.

Iran will compete at the World Cup for the sixth time in Qatar. They will open their campaign on November 21 against England and also face Wales and the United States in Group B.
