A dual citizen of the United States and Iran pled guilty today to planning to export illegally to end users in Iran, including the Iranian government, American products, technologies, and services in violation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

Court documents claim that between February 2019 and June 2021, Kambiz Attar Kashani, 44, and his accomplices circumvented U.S. export laws by buying electronic products, technologies, and services from U.S. technology companies for end users in Iran without obtaining the necessary licenses or other authorization from the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

Kashani followed instructions from a branch of the Iranian Central Bank (CBI). Due to CBI’s material assistance, sponsorship, or provision of monetary, material, or technological support to recognized terrorist organizations, OFAC has designated the company.

In addition to any forfeiture owed, Kashani has agreed to pay a $50,000 fine and a potential sentence of 20 years in jail. After taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legal considerations, a federal district court judge will decide on any sentence.

The statement was made by Special Agent in Charge Joseph R. Bonavolanta of the FBI’s Boston Field Office, Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Department’s National Security Division, and U.S. Attorney Breon Peace for the Eastern District of New York.

The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Meredith A. Arfa and Alexander A. Solomon of the Eastern District of New York, with support from Trial Attorney S. Derek Shugert of the National Security Division’s Counterintelligence and Export Control Section.
