Labour Party’s Critique
The Labour Party (LP) has voiced strong criticism against Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, following his pledge to assist over 4,000 youths from the state in securing jobs in Europe and Canada by the end of the year.
Uzodinma, who is seeking re-election under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner, made this promise during a campaign event in preparation for the upcoming governorship election on November 11.
Governor’s Pledge to Imo Youths
Governor Uzodinma, while addressing residents, expressed his commitment to aiding interested Imo indigenes in relocating to Europe or Canada.
He vowed to equip them with the necessary employable skills that would facilitate their transition and adaptation to life abroad.
Labour Party’s Response
Yunusa Tanko, the spokesman of the LP Presidential Campaign Council, expressed the party’s strong disapproval of Governor Uzodinma’s promise. Tanko characterized the pledge as an insult to the people of Imo State.
He argued that it was deceptive for the governor, who has not been able to provide sufficient employment opportunities for the state’s youth, to offer jobs overseas.
Alternative Approach to Job Creation
Tanko highlighted the LP’s commitment to addressing the issue of youth unemployment differently.
He emphasized that the party’s governorship candidate in Imo, Senator Athan Achonu, prioritizes the creation of local job opportunities within the state.
Rather than making unrealistic promises, Tanko asserted that Achonu’s focus is on empowering Imo youths to contribute to the development of their home state.
Confidence in INEC’s Transparency
Responding to questions about the party’s confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), particularly in terms of transparency, Tanko expressed hope that INEC would rectify the issues witnessed during the presidential elections.
He acknowledged the need for a well-organized and efficient electoral process in Imo State.
Supreme Court’s Potential Role
Tanko also mentioned the LP’s anticipation of potential Supreme Court involvement to address election-related concerns.
He stressed the importance of a smooth electoral process in Imo State, given the prior challenges faced during the governor’s election.
Tanko highlighted the significance of functioning voter registration and electronic systems to ensure a fair election in the state.
Impact on LP Supporters
Despite the verdict of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, Tanko emphasized that the LP’s supporters remain undeterred.
He noted that the ruling had served to galvanize the inner determination of Nigerian youths and their commitment to participating in the political process.
