Illegal Institutions, Fake NYSC Camp Closed by ICPC

In Nigeria, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) has shut down 62 fraudulent degree-granting organizations.

Also shut down was a bogus National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp.

Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, the chairman, disclosed the information on Tuesday during an Abuja Youth Dialogue on Corruption in Tertiary Institutions.

Owasanoye, who was represented by ICPC Board member in charge of young Hannatu Mohammed, revealed that the commission has prosecuted the perpetrators.

No nation can grow beyond the level and quality of its education, according to the chairman.

According to Owasanoye, the ICPC formed anti-corruption vanguards in schools to further the fight against corruption, especially in higher education institutions.

He asserts that the vanguards give student members the power to instill a zero-tolerance policy for corruption and a change in behavior among their peers.

According to Owasanoye, the ICPC conducted a System Study and Review of the university system in order to identify corruption-supporting activities.

The study uncovered instances of bribery, gratification, sexual harassment and sexual inducement, examination malpractices, overbilling, and overinflation of contract values.
