Iga Swiatek wins San Diego Open over Donna Vekic

Iga Swiatek won her eighth title of the year with a 6-3 3-6 6-0 victory over Donna Vekic of Croatia in the final of the San Diego Open on Sunday.

Swiatek pumped her fist and blew a kiss to the audience after Vekic double faulted on match point to conclude a third set in which the Pole raised her level and tournament qualifier Vekic ultimately ran out of steam.

Swiatek’s strategy coming into the deciding set of the new WTA 500 event was to “go all in.”

“Recognizing how good she can serve, I simply desired to be more relaxed in my return games. Not overthink, rely on intuition, and compete for every ball.”

Swiatek earned the first break of service of the match in the opening set when Vekic, who had to complete her semi-final earlier on Sunday due to rain, sent a backhand long at 4-2 to give Swiatek the advantage.

Swiatek won the opening set after Vekic threw her racket in exasperation after committing yet another backhand error.

However, Vekic refused to surrender without a fight and evened the score with a booming serve and aggressive groundstrokes.

Swiatek hit a crosscourt winner to break for a 2-0 lead in the deciding set, which swung the tempo decisively in her favor.

Swiatek, who became world number one in April after Ash Barty’s retirement, has a current record of 64-8. This year, the 21-year-old has won the US Open and the French Open and will be a prohibitive favorite when the WTA Finals begin in Fort Worth on October 31.

Vekic, who had knee surgery following last year’s Australian Open, can hold her head high after defeating Danielle Collins, Aryna Sabalenka, and Karolina Pliskova and extending the championship to three sets.

Swiatek stated, “I’m ecstatic that you’re back, and I’m hopeful that we’ll play in many more championships together.”
