Husband of Jersey City kindergarten teacher who was strangled and buried charged with her murder

The husband of a kindergarten teacher from Jersey City who was buried in a shallow grave after being beaten and strangled has been charged with her murder, according to authorities. Cesar Santana, 36, was initially charged with concealing human remains after being arrested by US Marshals at a Miami motel two weeks ago.

However, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office has now charged Santana with first-degree murder, as well as hindering, failing to dispose of human remains, and tampering with evidence. Santana’s alleged accomplice, Leiner Miranda Lopez, has been charged with concealing human remains but remains on the run.

Hernandez, a 33-year-old mother of three and kindergarten teacher at BelovED Charter School, was reported missing by her job on February 6th when she failed to show up for work.

The police found a crime scene at her Van Horne Street home the next day during a welfare check. Hernandez’s body was discovered on February 7th near Central Avenue and Third Street in Kearny, buried in a shallow grave.

The prosecutor’s office is investigating the murder as an act of domestic violence, as Hernandez’s estranged husband and father of her children is the alleged perpetrator. Autopsy results revealed that Hernandez died of blunt force trauma to the head and compressions to the neck.

Santana was extradited to New Jersey on Tuesday and is being held at the Hudson County Correctional Facility awaiting his first court appearance. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. Hernandez was remembered as a wonderful mother and a kind, beautiful person who loved kids and her job.
