Hong Kong police have started searching a landfill for evidence connected to the murder of model Abby Choi, whose dismembered body parts were discovered in a refrigerator and pots. Choi’s ex-husband Alex Kwong, his father Kwong Kau, and his brother Anthony Kwong have been charged with murder, and Alex Kwong’s mother, Jenny Li, has been charged with perverting the course of justice. All four have been detained without bail, and their hearing has been adjourned until May. Choi disappeared on February 21, and her remains were discovered in a rented house in a suburban part of Hong Kong near the border with mainland China. The family has not yet entered their pleas, and their lawyers have not commented on the case to the media.

On Tuesday, more than 100 officers wearing protective gear went to North East New Territories Landfill in Ta Kwu Ling, near mainland China, to search for the missing body parts with excavators and shovels. Police had said earlier they were still looking for Choi’s hands and torso. Police Superintendent Alan Chung told reporters that the suspects had thrown away several bags of important evidence on February 22, and they may be some human body parts or even the weapons. However, the police could not find anything substantial yet, other than bones, which they could not identify.

Choi’s family, dressed in black, gathered near the house where her body parts were found to pay respects. Alex Kwong appeared in another court on Tuesday for a previous theft case where he had jumped bail. Choi had more than 100,000 followers on Instagram and had financial disputes involving tens of millions of Hong Kong dollars with her ex-husband and his family, according to the police. The gruesome killing has shocked many in Hong Kong and across mainland China, as the city has a very low level of violent crime.

Choi’s friend Bernard Cheng earlier said he initially thought she had been kidnapped. Cheng said Choi had four children, aged between three and ten. Alex Kwong, 28, was the father of the older two, who are being taken care of by Choi’s mother. Choi had remarried to Chris Tam, father of the younger children, who are staying with his family. While violent crime is rare in Hong Kong, the case recalls a handful of other shocking killings.
