Hockey star Abakar Kazbekov passed away at age 18

Abakar Kazbekov, a center with the London Knights, has passed away, the team and the Ontario Hockey League confirmed on Saturday. He was 18.

The joint statement provided no further information. Kazbekov, who was Russian, participated in Friday’s 5-2 home triumph over the Owen Sound Attack.

CTV News London reports that the London Police Service is conducting an investigation after discovering Kazbekov’s body on a pavement early Saturday morning.

The native of Moscow had been a member of the Knights since the beginning of the previous season. Prior to this, he participated in the Russian under-16 and under-18 leagues.

This season, Kazbekov recorded one assist in 12 appearances for London. Last season, he scored one goal in nine games.

The Knights and OHL announced that Saturday night’s game between London and Flint has been postponed.

The league also announced the postponing of two more games, Erie Otters vs. Saginaw Spirit and Kingston Frontenacs vs. Peterborough Petes, out of respect for players who were close to Kazbekov.
