Greeks want King involved in Elgin Marbles dispute

King Charles may support the Greek prime minister’s most recent effort to bring the Elgin Marbles back to Athens.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis will bring up the matter with Liz Truss when he visits London later this year because he thinks Britain is getting closer to returning the statues.

The 2,500-year-old marbles were removed from the Parthenon by Lord Elgin, the envoy to the Ottoman Empire, between 1801 and 1812.

The British Museum Act of 1963 prohibits the transfer of ownership of artifacts from the museum, notwithstanding the Greeks’ claims that they were stolen.

The 54-year-old Mr. Mitsotakis told The Sunday Times that he had a “excellent personal connection” and thought King Charles was helpful.

He added: “I believe the sentiment is shifting in the UK.” He said that the King had “a Greek ancestry which he appreciates and adores.”

It has been revealed that 71-year-old Greek billionaire John Lefas is spending millions to fly British MPs to Athens so they may advocate for an end to UK legislation and the restoration of the marbles.

Former Tory culture minister Lord Vaizey has already traveled as part of the Parthenon Project, according to The Sunday Telegraph.
