Governor Gavin Newsom issues statement on Engineer Ali Shabazz’s death

The following statement was issued by Governor Gavin Newsom today in response to the passing of Engineer Ali Shabazz, who worked for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans):

“Both Jennifer and I are utterly heartbroken to have learned of the untimely passing of Ali Shabazz, a devoted employee of Caltrans who had been serving the people of California for more than 16 years.

During this difficult time, we would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to his family as well as his many friends and coworkers at Caltrans.

Shabazz, who was 48 years old and from Fresno, was killed when the vehicle he was driving was struck late on Sunday night as he was working and on his way to a job location in the Fresno area.

Since 1921, he is the 191st worker for Caltrans to pass away as a result of an accident or illness while on the job.
In 2006, Shabazz started working for Caltrans. His wife, Nia, and their eight children will carry on his legacy after his passing.

At the request of Shabazz’s family, the flags at the State Capitol and the Capitol Annex Swing Space will be lowered to the half-staff position today.
