Gov. Newsom demands Los Angeles City Council resignations

The resignation of everyone involved in the Los Angeles City Council racist audio leak controversy has now been demanded by California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The well-known Democrat has suggested that the two surviving council members, Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo, should retire in addition to former Council President Nuri Martinez.

On October 12, Martinez made her resignation known.

His remarks followed their KQED discussion with Republican Sen. Brian Dahle, his opponent for governor.

I wanted to give them some space, but I believe I was quite clear with Nury that she made the correct decision, according to Newsom. And I believe the rest need to follow suit.

“I wanted to give them the chance to be truthful about what they said and the chance to defend what they said,” he said. We thus anticipate news in the near future, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Despite losing the election to Eunisses Hernandez earlier this year, Cedillo will be leaving office soon.

De Leon has repeatedly said that he has no intention of leaving his position. In an interview with Univision, he stated: “No, I will not leave. There is a lot of work ahead.” Additionally, he called the remarks “a poor joke.”

De Leon can be heard making a comparison between Martinez attending council meetings with a Louis Vuitton bag and a colleague’s black son in the tape that was released.

The two were fired from their committee positions a week ago. The housing and homelessness committees of the council were therefore without chairmen.

The public, President Joe Biden, and other prominent political leaders have harshly criticized the city council members for remarks they made on a stolen audio tape from October 2021.

Words matter, and hateful words can inflict real damage,” Newsom earlier said before requesting the resignations. These remarks have no place in our state or in our politics, and we must all set a better example by acting in accordance with the principles that so many of us work tirelessly to defend.

According to ABC Los Angeles, Black Lives Matter demonstrators have parked outside de Leon’s house and have said that they won’t move until he resigns, despite demands for him to do so.

According to activist Dr. Melina Abdullah, “It was horrible what these people said, but it’s more horrendous what these people did.”

We need to be clear that when Kevin de León co-signed on the diminution and dehumanization of a Black youngster, it was his words that were troubling.

While Aurora Pedro, the head of the indigenous activist group CIELO, disagreed with de Leon’s assertion that the remarks were only a jest, she stated: “No. You said those things. We overheard your laughter as you laughed at those jokes, therefore we are now advising you that you should resign.

Martinez, Cedillo, and de León can also be heard joining in the racial jokes against the little youngster.

The boy’s father, Mike Bonin, was one among many who demanded a complete resignation.

“I get hit a lot, but my son? But let me be clear, nobody should be pleading with me for pardon.

I’m not allowed to forgive them, therefore I can’t. It is the right of a youngster who is too young to fully comprehend what is happening.

Ron Herrera, president of the Los Angeles Federation of Labor, is also audible on the stolen audio file. Earlier this week, Herrera tendered his resignation from his job.

Martinez also disparaged the district attorney, claiming: “He’s with the blacks.”

She also alleged that one of her colleagues, an Armenian, had “one eyebrow” and claimed that others didn’t have a chance of winning elections in white communities.

Martinez calls his Jewish coworkers “judios,” which is Spanish for “Jews.” She was alluding to Richard Katz, a former state assemblyman, and his group.

Herrera started the discussion by stating, “I’m sure Katz and his gang have an agenda.”

The Judios struck their arrangement with South L.A., she retorted. I think of it that way. Additionally, they’re going to hurt everyone else.
