Alphabet Inc is eliminating 12,000 positions, according to an internal memo published with Reuters.
The layoffs are the most recent to rock the IT sector and come just days after rival Microsoft Corp announced it would lay off 10,000 employees.
The layoffs affect teams across the organization, including engineering, engineering products, and some business operations.
Google stated that the layoffs are global and will affect U.S. employees immediately.
Google and Microsoft have been investing in a young area of software known as generative artificial intelligence amid a period of economic instability and technological promise.
Alphabet’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, stated in the note, “I am optimistic about the enormous opportunity before us due to the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our early investments in AI.”
