The Gold State Coach, traditionally used by British monarchs to travel to their coronation at Westminster Abbey, will not be used by the King and Queen on May 6.

The couple will travel in another vehicle, and the Irish State Coach is a possible option. The Gold State Coach will wait outside Westminster Abbey and transport the royals back to the Palace.

Queen Elizabeth II used the Gold State Coach for her 1953 coronation and described the ride as “horrible” due to the lack of suspension. According to royal experts, the King and Queen will still likely choose a carriage instead of a car as a nod to the King’s late father, Prince Philip.

Dr George Gross, a visiting fellow in theology at King’s College London, suggested that the royals might use another coach from the Royal Mews Collection, such as the Diamond Jubilee State Coach built in Australia, to include a Commonwealth element to the event.

The Gold State Coach was commissioned in 1760 and first used by George III. It has been used at every coronation from George IV onwards, and Queen Elizabeth II also used it for her Silver and Golden Jubilee celebrations.

A hologram of the Queen at her coronation was displayed from the coach during her Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2022.
