Gauteng chief of police was robbed of valuables, cash, and firearms

Major-General Daniel Tommy Mthombeni, the former acting police commissioner of Gauteng, had his service handgun stolen during a daylight robbery in Midrand on Thursday.

Several unnamed police detectives, who are not permitted to speak to the media, stated that Mthombeni was visiting a tailor for changes at Northern Dry Cleaners in the Link Shopping Centre when he was attacked by two armed individuals.

The armed robbers, masked in balaclavas and demanding cell phones from anyone inside the store, were armed with weapons. Mthombeni complied and surrendered his two costly iPhones.

“After stealing the mobile phones, the suspects requested and stole Mthombeni’s Gucci bag. The bag contained a Panorama timepiece, Mercedes Benz car keys, a Clock 25-40 caliber handgun, and R2,100 in cash. The estimated value of all the products is around R49,100, stated the officer.

The other suspect, according to a second police officer, grabbed Mthombeni and forcibly removed his Patek Philippe wristwatch. The suspects made their getaway in a silver-gray Hyundai and remain at large.
