Gareth Bale declares his retirement from professional football

Monday, at the age of 33, Gareth Bale announced his retirement from club and international football, bringing to a close one of the most decorated careers in British football history.

Bale, who earned a record 111 games for Wales, guided his country from international football obscurity to two European Championships and a World Cup for the first time since 1958.

The forward for Los Angeles FC, who previously played for Southampton, Tottenham, and Real Madrid, made his final competitive appearance on November 29 during Wales’ World Cup group stage match against England.

Bale tweeted on social media, “After careful and thoughtful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football.”

“I consider myself extraordinarily fortunate to have realized my dream of playing the sport I like.

“It has provided me with some of the most memorable moments of my life. No matter what the next chapter has for me, I will never be able to match the 17 seasons of unparalleled success.

Bale established his reputation in the Premier League with Tottenham before going to Real Madrid in 2013, where he won five Champions League titles.

The forward joined Los Angeles FC in June 2022, and in his brief time in the United States, he won the MLS Cup.

From my first touch at Southampton to my last at LAFC, and everything in between, shaped a club career for which I am incredibly proud and appreciative.

It would be impossible for me to express my appreciation to everyone who has contributed to this journey, he continued. I am obliged to a great number of people for helping me transform my life and career in ways I could never have imagined at the age of nine.”

LAFC honored their leading forward.

“We want to thank Gareth for everything he brought to our club,” stated John Thorrington, co-president and general manager of LAFC.

“He came to Los Angeles with the intention of winning championships, and he did so, as he has elsewhere in his career.

It was a privilege for LAFC to have one of the most brilliant, dynamic, and exciting players of his generation end his career with a championship.

“Congratulations on an incredible career,” Tottenham tweeted.
