“From Spokane to Puglia: American Couple in Their 70s Makes Italy Their Permanent Home”

In a bold move to escape what they deemed as the ‘materialistic’ lifestyle in America, Glenda and Randy Tuminello, a couple in their 70s from Spokane, Washington, made the decision to relocate their entire lives to the picturesque Puglia region of Italy in December 2022.

Revising Retirement Plans Amidst a Pandemic

Originally planning to spend a year in Europe to celebrate their retirement, the couple’s plans were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This unforeseen circumstance prompted a reassessment of their long-term dreams, leading to the bold decision to move full time to Puglia.

Roots and Connection to Italy

Randy’s family history played a significant role in their choice of Italy. His grandparents had migrated from Cefalu, Sicily, to Louisiana in the early 1900s. Randy expressed the feeling of coming home, stating, “We feel more at home here than we ever felt in the US.”

Choosing Puglia for Retirement

The Tuminellos researched various regions that enticed new immigrant retirees with a seven per cent flat tax, ultimately settling on Polignano a Mare in Puglia. The town’s historic credentials, coastal location, and an affordable lifestyle were key factors in their decision.

Adjusting to the Italian Lifestyle

Having sold their home and possessions, the couple now rents a two-bedroom house in Polignano a Mare for $1,200 a month. While they considered buying initially, economic uncertainties led them to opt for renting.

Benefits and Challenges of the Move

The Tuminellos highlighted the sense of community and safety in Polignano, contrasting it with the materialistic aspect prevalent in the US.

However, they admitted challenges such as missing American foods like barbecue sauce and struggling with the language barrier.

Looking Ahead to a New Chapter

Despite the challenges, Glenda and Randy Tuminello are embracing their new life in Italy, finding solace in the sense of community and cultural richness that Puglia offers. Their journey serves as an inspiring tale of seeking a different lifestyle in their golden years.
