Fox News to face $1.6b lawsuit over 2020 election fraud claims, that Biden rigged the election

Fox Corp. is currently facing a defamation lawsuit filed by Dominion Voting Systems, which is claiming more than $1.6 billion in damages.

Dominion became widely known after the 2020 US election, when Fox News aired false conspiracy theories about the company’s voting machines being used to rig the election against Donald Trump.

The damages claim is part of Dominion’s lawsuit against Fox, alleging that the network damaged the company’s reputation by airing falsehoods. Fox argues that its statements were newsworthy and protected by the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

Legal experts not involved in the case suggest that Dominion has a strong case for defamation, and Fox is raising the damages issue to reduce the amount it would have to pay if it loses. A five-week trial is set for April 17, although a settlement could still be reached.

Dominion claims that its reputation suffered significantly following Fox’s coverage, and it has sustained losses totaling $1.4 billion in overall value as a business, plus $133.8 million in lost profits.

The company is also seeking $912 million in lost future profits and an unspecified amount of punitive damages. To support its claim, Dominion cites at least 20 terminated or declined customer contracts and 39 lost business opportunities due to Fox’s coverage.

Fox maintains that Dominion’s damages estimate is based on faulty assumptions and is “fanciful,” and that Dominion’s business was minimally affected by the election coverage.

Fox also claims that the damages request is designed to enrich Dominion’s investors, who bought the company for $80 million in 2018.
