Former Royal AM co-coach Dan Malesela talks about managing player-chairman Andile Mpisane

Dan Malesela, a former co-coach for Royal AM, has spoken up about what it was like to manage Andile Mpisane, the club’s player-chairperson.

Mpisane, 21, had his first appearance of the year earlier this month when he was an unused replacement in Thwihli Thwahla’s 1-0 loss to Richards Bay FC.

Many people who are still unconvinced that he deserves to play in the Premier League ridiculed his participation.

Football fans came to the conclusion that since Mpisane was required to be included by high management, the coaches had no option but to do so.

Malesela claims that the chairman “worked hard” in practise, nevertheless, much like other athletes, and as coaches, they collectively opted to include his name in the matchday squad.

When asked how it felt to be coaching his employer, Malesela replied that he was treated equally with the other boys.

Malesela remarked in an interview with Sports Night Amplified on Metro FM, “[You coach your boss] like any other player, he is simply one of those guys.

While asked whether he used to yell at the chairman, he said, “It doesn’t really matter, he’s in our area when he’s on the field.”

In other news, Malesela claims that the fact that many of the players he worked with during his first tenure with the club are still there is what pulled him back to Marumo Gallants.

The bulk of the guys I had last season are still there, which is one of the main reasons I returned, he added.

“I need to take care of this brand [Dan Malesela] to determine where it can function, and from the [training] session we had today, you could see the players’ enthusiasm and curiosity.”
