Former Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood has broken cover in London today as an independent probe into allegations of sexual misconduct against him during his 20 years at the BBC continues.

The DJ and TV presenter was pictured looking dishevelled and withdrawn as he walked through Soho today wearing a green jacket and gripping his phone.

Mr Westwood, 64, was accused by six black women of sexual misconduct in a BBC Three documentary, Tim Westwood: Abuse of Power, which aired in April, before more women also came forward with allegations.

He has since avoided the public eye, only being pictured for the first time since the allegations emerged in August.

The rarely-sighted DJ also made an appearance at Notting Hill Carnival late last month, the Mirror reported.

In the same month, the BBC announced it was launching an independent inquiry into what the broadcaster knew about his conduct while he worked there and for other employers.

The inquiry, led by barrister Gemma White QC, who previously investigated bullying in parliament, is expected to last six months.

It will also look into whether concerns about Westwood’s behaviour played a part in his departure from the corporation in 2013, the BBC said.

In August, it emerged that the BBC received several reports about Westwood in 2012, including two allegations of inappropriate behaviour and sexual misconduct.

The revelation came after BBC director general, Tim Davie, initially said there was ‘no evidence of complaints’ against Mr Westwood.

Westwood has previously denied all allegations, with a spokesman saying there had never been any complaints against him.

Mr Westwood, who is described as a ‘veteran of the hip-hop scene’ and whose career has spanned over forty years, has also been embroiled in a Met Police investigation into his sexual conduct for months.

Scotland Yard detectives are investigating four sex allegations against Westwood dating back 40 years.

Mr Westwood stepped down from his show on Capital Xtra after seven women made accusations of sexual misconduct and predatory behaviour in a joint Guardian and BBC News investigation.

He has presented the Radio 1 rap show, the MTV show Pimp My Ride UK, 1Xtra and been on Capital Radio during his lengthy career.

Mr Westwood’s representative previously said in a statement to PA: ‘Tim Westwood strongly denies all allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

‘In a career that has spanned 40 years, there have never been any complaints made against him officially or unofficially.’
