Former Namibia rugby captain Gerhard Mans tragically killed on Wednesday from car strike

He was 60.

According to Namibian news agency Informanté, Mans died after he was hit by a car while cycling with his son, Gerhard jnr, on the Western Bypass.

The driver of a white BMW without number plates was reportedly arrested at the scene of the accident.

Mans, who played predominantly on the wing, captained of the first Namibian national side after the country’s independence in early 1990.

He played 27 Tests for Namibia between 1990 and 1994, scoring 26 tries.

 

Gerhard Mans was one of five nominees for the 1988 SA Rugby Player of the Year award alongside Adolf Malan, Calla Scholtz, Tiaan Strauss and eventual winner, Naas Botha.

Gerhard Mans also played for Free State

Mans also represented Free State in the early 1980s.

He hung up his boots after the 1994 season when Namibia failed to qualify for the 1995 Rugby World Cup, hosted, and famously won, by South Africa.
