Attahiru Jega Calls for Explanation from INEC
In a recent interview on Channels Television, former INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to provide a detailed explanation to the Nigerian public regarding the malfunctioning of the Result Viewing Portal (IreV) and the Bimodal Voter Registration Systems (BVAS) during the 2023 general elections.
Politicians Blamed for Disrupting Technological Systems
Jega pointed fingers at desperate politicians, accusing them of deliberately interfering with the voting system by infiltrating the two technological systems implemented by INEC.
Despite INEC’s efforts to enhance transparency and integrity in the election process, Jega argued that certain politicians sought to gain an advantage by circumventing the IreV and BVAS systems.
INEC’s Struggle Against Political Interference
Expressing his perspective, Jega acknowledged the challenges faced by INEC in maintaining the integrity of electoral processes.
He emphasized that during his tenure from 2011 to 2015, and presumably continuing into 2023, politicians exhibited a tendency to outsmart the electoral commission’s technological advancements.
Jega stressed the need for INEC to stay ahead of such tactics to ensure the legitimacy of elections.
Call for Thorough Public Inquiry
Jega went further to suggest a thorough public inquiry into the issues surrounding the IreV failure, asserting that transparency demands a closer examination of the events.
Despite INEC’s chairman, Mahmood Yakubu’s confidence in the IreV system, Jega expressed suspicion that the technology might have been compromised, placing the blame on “reckless politicians” who, he believes, could have infiltrated and disrupted the system.
Inevitable Accountability for INEC
While acknowledging the difficult circumstances faced by INEC in the 2023 elections, Jega stressed the importance of the electoral body taking responsibility for the failures of the IreV and BVAS.
He believed that, ultimately, INEC would be held accountable for the disruptions caused by external interference, emphasizing the necessity for a comprehensive account of the events leading to the failures.
