A powerful nor’easter has hit the US northeast, dumping almost three feet of snow in some areas and leaving residents in several states without power on Wednesday morning.
This is the first nor’easter of the season, and millions have been placed under winter storm warnings in affected states, including New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire.
The storm traveled along the Eastern Seaboard, bringing with it cold winds that hung over the Northern Atlantic and rolled in from the northeast.
While it mostly spared New York City, communities further north were bombarded with heavy rain and winds that continued into Wednesday.
As of Wednesday morning, over 240,000 customers across the region were still without electricity, and over 1,100 flights were canceled.
The storm has caused extensive damage, including power lines and trees being brought down, with more snow expected in the early morning hours.
All of the affected states reported snowfall totals of more than two feet on Monday night, creating dangerous driving conditions.
The Catskills and areas surrounding Albany were among those told to stay home by the New York State Department.
Parts of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine are still under winter storm warnings, and officials are warning of more snowfall, as well as strong gusts of winds that could result in more power outages in affected states.
The storm has already caused damage in coastal communities, with Boston Logan International Airport being one of the most affected by ongoing flight cancellations and delays.
Governor Janet Mills of Maine urged residents to stay off the roads if they can and give plenty of space to road crews and first responders working hard to keep everyone safe.
Clean-up efforts are already in effect, with officials in Massachusetts sending roughly 1,700 pieces of equipment across the state on Tuesday to help with snow and ice response.
Despite the damage caused by the storm, no casualties have been reported in any of the affected states so far.
A child trapped under a fallen tree was rescued by more than a dozen fire officials in Derry, a small town 40 miles north of Boston.
After being freed, the child was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.
The storm will continue to move further inland on Wednesday morning, and it is not yet clear when residents in affected areas will regain power.
Winter storm warnings remain in effect.
