Firefighters battle flames after’many chemicals’ burst

Families were compelled to leave their houses this morning in Staffordshire after a number of chemical explosions caused a sizable wildfire that was put out by more than 40 firefighters.

At 6:20 this morning, Cannock’s industrial unit’s forecourt was reported to have a major fire. Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service was alerted.

The blaze ignited a number of extremely combustible substances that were present throughout the building.

Along with Staffordshire Police officers, crews from six nearby stations were dispatched to the scene where they quickly started to evacuate residential properties along Haling Way and the surrounding areas.

The incident was attended by additional West Midlands Fire Service crews.

‘The situation involves a considerable amount of chemicals on fire, some of which have burst,’ a fire department spokeswoman told The Mirror.

Locals are being evacuated by the police.

The fire was put out using four main jets and six breathing apparatus. It was determined that the fire started accidentally.

The situation was reduced by 8.20 am, leaving Stafford and Rugeley crews on the site.

When asked about the incident, station manager Jordan Money said: “Crews have worked diligently to put this fire under control and limit damage in the area.”

Although neighbours in the area can now go home.

‘We are still advising them to keep windows and doors shut whilst our crews remain at the scene and ensure the area is safe.’
