Federal Government Considers New Allowances for Judicial Office Holders, Including Professional Development and Long Service Benefits

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), acting on behalf of the Federal Government (FG), has proposed the implementation of three new allowances for judicial office holders.

These allowances aim to enhance the working conditions and benefits for judicial officers across the country.

1. Professional Development Assistant: Under this allowance, two law clerks will be assigned to provide assistance to all judicial officers in the country.

This move is expected to support their professional development and improve efficiency in their duties.

2. Long Service Allowance: This allowance aims to establish a seniority or hierarchy system among officers who have served on the bench for a minimum of five years compared to newly appointed officers.

It recognizes the experience and contribution of long-serving judicial officers.

3. Restricted or Forced Lifestyle: This allowance is designed to address the specific nature of the lifestyle of judicial officers while they are in active service.

It aims to provide necessary support and benefits to ensure a suitable and sustainable lifestyle for judicial officeholders.

RMAFC Chairman Presents Reports and Confirms Salary Increase

During a presentation of the reviewed remuneration package to Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, RMAFC Chairman, Muhammadu Shehu, disclosed these new allowances.

The presentation took place in Birnin Kebbi and was represented by federal commissioner Rakiya Tanko-Ayuba.

Furthermore, Shehu confirmed the approval of a 114% salary increase for elected politicians, including the President, Vice President, governors, lawmakers, as well as judicial and public office holders.

RMAFC’s Role and Effective Implementation

RMAFC is responsible for determining the appropriate remuneration for various political officeholders, including those mentioned in the Constitution.

As per Shehu’s announcement, the reviewed remuneration packages, along with the new allowances, have been effective since January 1, 2023.

This implementation aligns with the provisions of paragraph 32(d) of Part 1 of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Government (as amended).
