FBI Celebrates 50th Anniversary that Female Special Agents Joined the Agency

In May 1972, only ten days after J. Edgar Hoover’s passing, the acting director said the FBI would now consider applications from women who wanted to become special agents, reversing a long-standing practise.

Joanne Pierce (Misko) and Susan Roley (Malone) started their training at the FBI Academy in Quantico on July 17, 1972. Eleven women would be sworn in as special agents before the end of that year.

The first female agents paved the way for thousands of more to follow.

Although they are a growing and vital element of the FBI, women are still underrepresented among special agents today.

Women are present in all 56 of the FBI’s field offices – many of which they are leading – and have advanced to positions of leadership, and daily have an unquestionable influence on cases and investigations.
