Eskom to disconnect Pretoria, City of Tshwane

Eskom, South Africa’s national power company, has said that one of the essential measures to obtain the unpaid balance is to consider disconnecting the City of Tshwane Metro Municipality, which contains the nation’s capital, Pretoria. The Tshwane City

The City of Tshwane allegedly violated the terms of the electricity supply agreement it has with the energy provider by neglecting to pay the R1.6 billion that was due and payable on August 17, 2022, according to Eskom.

The City of Tshwane has only made payments totaling R68 million up to this point, which did nothing to reduce the enormous debt still owed on its electrical bill.

Senior Customer Services Manager for the electricity provider, Daphne Mokwena, said that several interactions with the City’s administration were made to guarantee that the account was paid. However, these steps seem to have had little impact since the City has apparently kept up its current behavior.

“The inconsistent payments are both untenable and unacceptable since Eskom’s financial position is well known. The City’s persistent failure to honour its payments places a huge burden on Eskom to continue providing it with electricity.

“Eskom will continue to apply different approaches to recover money owed to it and has acquainted the MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs of the risks associated with the late payment of the City of Tshwane’s electricity account.”
