Eskom may reduce outages by Thursday

On Wednesday, September 21, South Africa’s state-owned power company Eskom will keep removing 5 000 megawatts of capacity from the national system and may only lower this to 4 000 megawatts by Thursday, September 22.

Eskom stated in a message on Twitter late on Tuesday afternoon that even while some generating units are expected to go back into service, Stage 5 load shedding must continue in order to prevent the need to employ emergency generation reserves.

Bloomberg reports that it would be possible to lower the present level by one step by Thursday.

Due to deteriorating, outdated infrastructure that is impacting on corporate confidence and economic development, the utility struggles to supply the demand for power.

Eskom said that the excessive use of emergency generating reserves to replenish generation capacity has “severely limited” them.
